The outer material is soft and the mattress itself is firm and comfortable.

This Naturepedic mattress is suprisingly firm and comfortable. At 2 inches thick, it was just what we were looking for to keep with the safety guidelines of the portacrib. It just fit inside our Delta portacrib. We are delighted with this find after all the "mattress pads" that we looked at...even organic ones. Our baby will be using this as his main crib in our small bedroom, so a quality mattress was important to us. I highly recommend this mattress. At fifteen pounds, it is not the most portable of portacrib mattressess, but this didn't matter to us. Oh, and it is made here in the U.S.!

This was everything I wanted!!
There was no horrible chemical smell when I took it out of the box/bag, it is the perfect thickness for comfort without being overly plush to cause suffocation concerns. There is also no "crinkling plastic" sound from this mattress that you get from so many others. I love it!
Being made in the US is also a MAJOR benefit, not only are we supporting American workers, we don't have to worry about unknown chemicals!
